Bring on the Juice

medium_james_brown

We all know James Brown. The Godfather is far far away now, but the groove remains. And what a groove! I could talk about it for hours, so let’s juste select one song…. Funky drummer!

Not so famous, not so original, but so powerful! The intro’s smoothness! James’ voice (and poetical lyrics :) over the perfect blend of all instruments! What a song! Yet, it has not been called funky drummer for no reason! It is really amazing to have such a beat whith so much  softness. The drums is not especially deep, flat or loud, even the bass is very light. Then, how can they get our feet to move like that?? Well I guess that this the funk’s magic!

Have you met Barney?

63973693xr6

Lately I have been watching the sitcom How I met Your Mother. Let’s say I watched too much of it. I start to say Awesome, Freak and Legend…ary! Now I even expect to hear a whole crowd laughing when I make up a joke…

Seriously enough, I really fell in love with this sitcom. I will probably talk about it later, but today I just want to give a toast to Sir Barney Stinson!

Barney is the one who publicly lives up to its vicious standards. He is the one who helps that little dark part of the masculine brain to assume itself. And he is the soul of how I met your mother! Thank you Barney!

If you want to discover a few things concerning Barney:

ps: Here comes a web map about: How I Met Your Mother

When the levee breaks

Here are a few images that I selected and modified to illustrate the incredible atmosphere of this song (Led Zeppelin).

I planned to put the video on youtube, but there is a copyright issue with the music.

Anyway, I found it thrilling to work on expressing music with images, I hope that you will feel a bit of the song through the images, or a bit of the images through the song…

Clic, hhhhuffff and pffffffooo…

Waow! Who is Jonathan Levine?? To direct such a movie, he must be seriously not serious! Smoke, unreal sunrays and heavy hip-hop constantly fill the atmosphere inside Wackness. I loved it!

I think this the kind of movie that you cannot utterly understand the first time (like Memento, Michael Clayton or Matrix). Yet, when the end comes you are in a mess. Thinking about it, analysing scenes or just drown by a strange feeling. Usually it takes a few minutes to get back to the old reality. I do not know much about taste in cinema. I find it really hard to judge a movie and to justify its goodness or crapness. Anyway, when I fell like that I want to say: Thanks Mr Levine (and the whole team).

If you want to know more about Wackness and see different opinions,  I’ll advise you these articles:

I’m just talkin’bout my…

jk-rowling
We have all heard about this guy. Most of us read the books and sometimes saw the movies. We have all been drawn into that crazy commercials fury few years ago. I even like to think that a majority dreamt to go to Hogwarts a long time ago.
Whatever category you might fit into, you share the Potter’s bond. Evada Kedavra, Quidditch or Death Eaters, you know the meaning of these strange words. Today I do not have the same genuine enthusiasm concerning J.K. Rowling’s writings.
Yet I noticed that we have all been touched by the phenomena. The Potter’s whirlwind was so powerful that I think it is a generational object. We saw that little boy grow up while we were building ourselves. We talked about it with friends, read and reread the books during the holidays. Such a bond is strong and I am glad to know that I can talk or argue about it with people from “my generation”.
You left quite a trace JK!

Who’s your daddy?

Robin Williams

This guy is amazing! I love what he does! He is the genius in Aladdin, the radio speaker in Good Morning Vietnam, the crazy teacher in Dead Poet’s Society and Allan in Jumanji (childhood’s memories…). But all of that is nothing compared to Robin Williams on stage!! Gosh I have never seen such a show! He swears all the time, speaks with a dozen different accents and keeps on doing silly moves.
He turns every serious subject in a hilarious parody. He notices those small absurd details that show how much world is getting crazy. But instead of blaming it, he just laughs about it and express how good he feels out there.
I hope that you will make us laugh a lot Robin! Please keep on this way.

Here I put loads of his hilarious shows and crazy videos: Gooood Morning Vietnam!!

You caught me smilin’

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE

A great band that mixed soul and funk in a creative whirlwind. You cannot miss the specific colour of their sound. Dance to the Music, I get High on you, If you want me to stay, The Underdog, Family Affair… All these famous hits have inspired the new generation (the Red Hot, Jamiroquai, George Clinton…).
Live performances were amazing; people danced on the stage, the band improvised a lot and Sly was just amazing. His voice seemed to be made to bounce on Larry Graham’s (the guy who invented slap) groovy bass line.
Another point that explains the whole magic of Sly and the Family Stone is their fight against racism. At a time were black music was highly feared and criticised by the WASP they managed to write engaged song (such as the beautiful: don’t call me nigger whitey). Moreover, their band mixed black and white players. The result was certainly the best example that such a union could be most fruitful. Then came the usual troubles: drugs, big ego and divides… And the story ended.
Anyway, the groove remains the same. If DJs were playing more funk like Sly’s in the clubs, I am sure that there would not be so many guys drinking at the bar. Any time you need to cheer up, just listen to Sly. Your mouth will start smiling and your feet will start taping. Watch out, some say that after a few minutes the devil could go inside your head and make you dance like a demon…

We’re gonna groove!

ledzeppelin001

Led Zeppelin was my revolution. I discovered this band when I was 14 and I did not know anything about rock, blues, funk and all these things encompassed by the word music. Then came this scream over the deep gloomy bass line: “Been dazed and confused, soooooo long it’s not true”. Definitely amazing! But after the intro, it became something very very strange…

This is Led Zeppelin’s lure. These four guys were such great musicians that they could utterly let their creativity flow away. They had this ability to create something entirely different and weird while maintaining their credibility through thundering blues or groovy hard rock. Therefore one could go beyond the basic feeling of liking and not liking. Robert Plant’s voice is definitely not of the kind that you love at first hearing (especially after long years of pop music…). Yet, little by little I got addicted to it and I found the daily “radio singers” disappointing. Every listening brought new details and new experiences (and it still does!). I discovered another way of listening to music and it opened loads of new doors.

Today I have the feeling that we cannot judge music (and any other kind of art) with tangible facts. We cannot assess art, what only seems to matter is sensitivity. I do not know if it is right or wrong, but it is surely annoying. The “good taste” has been erased, thus there is no more trustful value. A simple “I do not like it” beats all your arguments. However, when I listen to L.Z. -do not worry, sometimes I also listen to other bands :)- I like to feel that this is genuinely good, though one can hate the sound; I like to think that he can understand why I love it. As music is globally becoming more commercial and basic, I think that bands that help you to listen differently are paramount. Though you cannot assert the goodness of your taste, I think that walking new paths and striving to remain open is the best way to develop the most accurate opinion.
No more serious talking! Enjoy: Led Zeppelin
